As I glance back at yesterday’s sermon, I am reminded of the 3 nails that Jesus took in our place. I titled the 3 nails the nail of courage, the nail of humility, and the nail of love.
John 19:17-27
1. The nail of courage represented the enormous acts of valor that we really can’t grasp our finite minds around. Courage is one of those great characteristics or traits that many people are unaware they possess until it is needed. That to me is what makes a person courageous. It is how they respond in a given situation. Jesus responded with courage as He allowed the nailing to take place knowing it would set us free!
2. The nail of humility represented the insults, the shame, the humiliation of complete exposure, and the mocking. Jesus experienced them all. He was humble even to the point of death Paul says in Philippians 2:8.
3. The nail of love represented all of Kingdom authority that God’s principles are based on; LOVE. Jesus looks at his mother, Mary, with love, and says, “Woman, here is your son. Jesus knew Mary would need to be reassured in the coming days. What better assurance than to have John by her side. John was the closest friend Jesus had.
When you think about all the nails that are keeping things together around this world, imagine what the world would be like without those precious 3 nails that pieced our Lord’s body. Those 3 nails are what hold the universe in place, with all of the courage, humility, and love for you and for me.
